Universal Lines Up Young Stars for ‘Safe House’

Universal Pictures has lined up a who’s who of young actors to star in Safe House, a chase thriller with a star (Denzel Washington) and director (Daniel Espinosa) attached.

The plot centers on an inexperienced CIA “housekeeper” tasked with watching over a secure safe house for agents and their targets. But when a former agent and suspected traitor (Washington) is brought to his location, rival forces descend and force the pair on the run.

According to Deadline and THR, the long list includes Ryan Reynolds, Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Zac Efron, James McAvoy, Sam Worthington, Taylor Kitsch, Garrett Hedlund, Channing Tatum, Chris Hemsworth and Shia LaBeouf. So essentially everyone in the age range…

The script by David Guggenheim spins a thrill ride, but not much tonally different than LaBeouf’s Eagle Eye, McAvoy’s Wanted, or Pine’s upcoming conspiracy flick Moscow, when he will become the fourth actor to play Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. Plus Reynolds is jammed up with offers already, so I wouldn’t bet on him playing sidekick to Denzel.
